Hope you get in- this is my favorite event of the year by far. Great singletrack, flat course, PBR and hula girls.

And unlike any other event at Stewart- no mud (or little mud).

Elite/Pro Men Race Report

Carpooled with Matt and arrived just in time for registration cutoff. Did a quick warm-up and lined up in the second row.

40 guys gunning down 3 miles of fire road was pretty cool, can't imagine what the Sport group was like with 120! Drafted lead pack and got into good position at start of singletrack in around 10th place. Had a great first lap and was feeling strong coming into lap 2.

A few muscles tinges came on at the mile 12 climbs and slowed the pace a bit, but was able to keep the cramp monsters at bay. With 3 miles to go, the homestretch was in sight, but all the sudden my rear wheel locks up...skewer came loose and damn wheel fell off...I thought the RWS thru-bolt system is supposed to be bomb proof! Guess you really need to torque these babies down. Lost 2 or 3 places getting the wheel back in order, but finished good enough for 15th in 3:24.

I know it's been said before, but these guys know how to put on a race...good food, great beer, and a water truck with ice-cold spring water to wash off.

Congrats to all who finished this epic race!

This was my first DarkHorse 40, and was the longest continuous off-road ride I've ever done, with the possible exception of last Memorial Day's Blue-Graham-Sprain trifecta led by John. As RAy said, it was a really well-run race. The course was marked exceptionally well, with tape in addition to arrows, the check-in in the morning was smooth, the aid stations were stocked and the cold drinks and BBQ afterwards topped it off.

I was in Sport group, which had about 120 people in it (the only age group division was for 50+) and wound up finishing 26th, which I was pretty happy about - I didn't have a great start, with about 80 people in front of me as we started down the 3 mile gravel road stretch - it kicked up a lot of dust, so I was glad to be wearing glasses. I was passing people but not gunning it, thinking there would be 37 more miles to save energy for, so when I reached the singletrack there was probably about 50 people ahead. From there I just did what I could to recover / preserve momentum through flowing, twisty, punchy sections and then hammer on any smooth sections. I had put my big ring back on and made much use of it. I did manage to pinch flat my rear tire before when I clumsily tried to hop over a puddle, but with the number of flats I'm getting, I'm faster at changing them now so it only set me back 5 minutes. Looking forward to next year's race!

Nice work boys. I agree with GR, one of my favorite races of the year--tough to sit it out.
Ray, impressive result--you outdid some really fast guys on that list. Looks like the hard work is paying off.

Great job Ray and Matt, very strong results especially considering the mechanicals! Congrats...
