A quick recap of the H2H Race #5 - Kittatinny Valley put on by Bulldog & Cyclecraft:
The course was run in reverse of what I recall racing, which made it interesting. Overall, it was a very fast course (I clocked my highest avg race speed of 12 mph), dry, and with many rocky areas, though they were mostly embedded rocks rather than loose stuff. Just 1 significant climb, about 1/2 mile from the start, though there were several punchy quick climbs. Very well suited to a 29er, IMO.
I had a good warmup & decent position at the starting line, centered but in the 2nd row of racers. There were about 12 people in my group, cat2 35-39. We sprinted the first 1/4 mile, then backed off a bit in the second 1/4 before the climb. I wanted to leave some room in case the initial leaders bobbled the climb, which did in fact happen. Through the first lap I thought I was in about 3rd place, trying to chase down Jun and Lance, with Marc very close behind. I was actually 1 place farther back, since I didn't know the actual leader was ahead. I was able to burst past Jun on a road section, but couldn't totally get away so I eased up a little to reserve energy. He overtook me, and Marc and Lance came by as well, but I kept them in sight. In the 2nd lap, Marc stretched his lead out and was gone, but on a short climb I got around Jun and Lance. I hadn't blown up, and was able to keep it together through several short tech climbs in the last couple miles of the 2nd lap to hold them off. I dropped a gel flask as I was drinking but didn't stop for it since I knew they were at most 30 seconds back. At the finish I saw Marc and we figured we had gone first and second - but it turned out that Dan W had come in a little under a minute ahead of Marc. He must have kept a decent amount ahead of the pack right from the first climb. So I was third, which I'm happy with, since I raced my best and didn't have any bad luck.
